The Green Lots Project

The Green Lots Project practices food autonomy through community gardening, education for self-determination and community food system development. We are based on the Southside of Chicago. GLP currently manages two gardens in the Roseland neighborhood. We are explicitly anti-racist, pro-Black, pro-indigenous and use the wisdom of African heritage knowledge and indigenous traditional ecological knowledge along with permacutlure design to build community and improve our lives. We are part of a growing food revolution! See you in the soil!!!

MISSION

The Green Lots Project is committed to inspire and educate communities across the country to grow food in environmentally sustainable ways and create Community Food Systems where fresh, affordable, and locally produced food is available to all.

VALUES

Access to Land

We believe that economic security and community political participation is strengthened when community members are empowered and have access to land for the purpose of growing food.

Sustainable Small-Scale Agriculture

We believe that bountiful amounts of affordable, healthy food can and should be grown in and around the city using simple, appropriate technology and renewable resources. We value sustainable growing practices as essential to our responsible participation in the restoration and preservation of our ecosystem.

Education

We value learning through the teaching of curriculum that focuses on the development of Community Food Systems. Community members will learn how to grow, process, market and distribute food in a sustainable manner. This is a process rooted in observation, reflection, and participation that deepens the overall understanding of the communities and world around us; as well as skill building for employment opportunities in urban farming.

Governance

We value operating and self-governance structures and processes that are guided by transparency, honesty, diversity, mutual respect, openness, on-going evaluation, celebration, and a commitment to stakeholder participation.

Community

We believe that when people work together to grow food, reconnecting with the land, rededicating ourselves to the earth; families and communities grow strong, hopeful, confident and healthy.

Collaboration

We value local knowledge and experience, and community dialogue. We believe that through collaboration we will overcome barriers to sharing power and resources with community members and partner organizations to nurture healthy, powerful communities.
